In response to the difficult but necessary financial decisions being made by the government to fix the £22 billion black hole left by the previous administration, Amanda Martin MP is raising awareness about Pension Credit as we approach the winter months.
With changes to the winter fuel payment affecting many, Amanda is keen to support those on fixed incomes. The financial assistance available can significantly help those struggling to make ends meet, providing a vital top-up to their income.
Pension Credit serves as a crucial safety net, offering extra financial assistance to claimants over the State Pension age who are on a low income. It can also contribute to housing costs, including ground rent and service charges. Additional support may be available for claimants who are carers, severely disabled, or responsible for children.
The city council is also in receipt of ‘The Household Support Fund’ money from the government to help residents with essential daily costs like food and energy bills, available from October 2024 until April 2025. And in addition, this year the warm homes discount of £150 will also help more than a million low-income pensioners.
Amanda Martin MP said, “I recently met a man and his daughter on Cosham High Street who only receives the state pension as his sole income. He had no idea he was eligible for greater support, from housing costs to fuel payments.
There are over 800,000 pensioners in the UK who do not claim what they are entitled to, often due to a lack of awareness about their entitlement.”
Criticising the previous government for its inaction, Martin expressed her commitment to advocating for the rights of Portsmouth pensioners. “Instead of helping those pensioners who need support, previous Conservative Ministers failed to drive the uptake of Pension Credit. This new government is committed to increasing uptake, the triple lock over the course of the next Parliament and fixing the foundations of our country.”
To assist those in need, Amanda is encouraging anyone who thinks they may qualify for Pension Credit to reach out and check their eligibility.
